Life Sciences/Healthcare Sector Specialist -
The British Consulate-General in Cambridge, MA has an opportunity for an intelligent, self-motivated individual to join the UK Trade & Investment team.
Applications are invited for a Life Sciences/Healthcare Sector Specialist, based at the British Consulate-General, Boston and working both locally and as a network-wide resource with travel in the US. The successful candidate will be offered a 2-year defined term contract, which may be renewed subject to performance and operational requirements.
JOB SUMMARY
UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) is the United Kingdom Government's international business development agency (See www.uktradeinvest.gov.uk & www.tradeinvestusa.com). The Life Sciences/Healthcare Sector Specialist's task will be to promote the UK's strength in R&D, promote inward investment and trade development objectives in the life sciences, biotechnology, pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. The specialist will generate and be responsible for major stakeholder relationships including the UK Department of Health, the UK National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). S/he will work under the day to day management of the Head of Trade & Investment at the British Consulate-General in Boston.
While based at the British Consulate-General in Boston, the Sector Specialist will work as a US network-wide resource. The Specialist will work closely with the UK Government's US Science & Innovation network.
MAIN JOB FUNCTIONS
- Contribute to policy formulation in the life sciences and healthcare fields by UK Trade & Investment, Department of Health, NICE and MHRA, and translating policy developments into commercial opportunities;
- Provide market intelligence and analytical reporting on US life sciences and healthcare developments to UK stakeholders and companies, including on regulatory and other market entry issues;
- Act as the lead officer for high level UK government (including Ministerial) interaction and visits to major US -based life science investors in the UK;
- Inform US organisations and companies of UK life sciences and healthcare developments in order to leverage trade and investment opportunities;
- Provide input to business plans compiled by trade and investment officers, and advising those officers on industry trends and emerging opportunities;
- Identify and management of investment projects, and support for/advice to trade and investment officers in working with potential clients and customers, eg on specific products and services, joint visit programmes and development of key sales messages and materials;
- Execute trade chargeable activity;
- Develop a wide range of high level contacts within the industry, with a view to promoting UK strengths and capabilities;
- Monitor science and technology developments in the life sciences field, and identifying early revenue-generating possibilities;
- Manage US Life Sciences web pages outlining UK excellence in the sector, market opportunities and guidance on UK regulatory issues.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
This is a high-level job requiring extensive experience of the life sciences sector combined with strong analytical and representational skills.
- Educated to at least degree level in a relevant subject;
- Significant specialist knowledge, and at least seven years business experience in the life sciences/healthcare sector;
- Understanding of the UK and US life sciences market, with in depth knowledge of their strengths and capabilities;
- Understanding of the regulatory framework for these industries in both the UK and the US;
- Self-starter, able to work on own initiative, while operating as part of a wider UK team (with wide ranging objectives);
- Ability to advise a variety of stakeholders;
- Ability to deal credibly with US and UK companies and agencies at a very senior level;
- Ability to provide clear and concise analytical advice, and readiness to respond to ad-hoc requests at short notice;
- Excellent communication, negotiation, presentational and interpersonal skills and ability to provide focused advice in non-technical language.
