Binding Site, The

Binding Site is a Birmingham based, privately owned company specialising in the research, development and manufacture of innovative, high quality laboratory blood tests for the healthcare diagnostics market.

From its founding as a commercial company in 1984 (with earlier origins at the Medical School of Birmingham University), Binding Site has grown organically over 25 years into a worldwide market leader in its field with a current annual turnover of £39 million (Sept 08). Its main markets are in both the private and public sector and include hospitals, private reference laboratories, universities and diagnostic, pharmaceutical and therapeutics manufacturers.

The business is divided into three main areas, all utilising its specialist highly specific antibodies:
Freelite: a unique and highly significant blood test increasingly used for the diagnosis and monitoring of Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of cells in the bone marrow. Due to substantial recognition of its utility by clinicians worldwide there are 2 million Freelite tests performed annually (Sept 08) increasing at a rate of around 40% per year.
Autoimmune: Many common diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and Coeliac Disease are autoimmune in origin (when the body can't distinguish between foreign and self) and Binding Site blood tests help diagnose and monitor the treatment of these diseases.
Immunodeficiency: Binding Site remains a market leader in products to investigate disorders of the immune system and in manufacture of therapeutics and vaccines.

Binding Site Group employs close to 500 staff worldwide with over 350 at its headquarters in Birmingham responsible for product development, manufacturing, global distribution, marketing, administration and direct sales to UK customers. Customers in USA, Canada, Germany, Austria, France and Spain are supported by local Binding Site offices. Experienced distributor companies support customers in a further 62 countries.

Binding Site is the winner of 2 Queen's Awards, for Innovation in 2007 (Freelite) and International Trade in 1992.
