AK Industries Ltd

Certificated to ISO 13485 and ISO 9001, A K Industries (AKI) provides technically demanding, injection-moulded component and sub-assembly solutions for medical devices, life science and biotechnology equipment and other laboratory applications. Typical customers range from 3M Health Care, Arrow Medical and Malvern Instruments to Molecular Dimensions, Tepnel BioSystems and Nalge Europe. 75% of the over 100-strong specialist workforce at AKI are in production functions, on a 60,000 sq ft total site with more than 30 injection moulding machines from 6 to 450 tonnes clamping force plus a broad spectrum of robotic handling, ancillary and assembly equipment. AKI adds value to its technical mouldings through a wide range of processes, assembly operations and finishes. AKI's versatility embraces multi-component and multi-material processing (insert moulding and two-shot moulding), nitrogen gas-assisted moulding, mini and micro injection moulding, ultrasonic welding and cleanroom assembly, checking and packing. Meanwhile materials choice extends over many thousands of high-performance, engineering and commodity plastics. All customers selecting AKI as a single supplier "from first concept to final process" profit from AKI's collective years of problem-solving experience and expertise acquired on projects with similar features to theirs. The benefits of this cumulative "knowledge bank" include marked reductions in development costs and in time-to-market. Furthermore AKI works closely with the Pera organisation as a "prime partner" on European innovation projects. Among diverse examples are a sharp-safe, polymer syringe needle for insulin delivery; "Medi-Voice" smart pharmaceutical packaging for users with vision and reading difficulties; the "Rapi-Heal" manually controlled vacuum device to assist the treatment of open wounds, burns, bedsores and chronic leg ulcers; and "Lasinject", which aims to improve the accuracy of vaccine delivery to dendritic (immune) cells in the fight against AIDS. AKI's ground-breaking initiatives for the next decade continue with the development at Pera of nanoclay-filled polymers for single-use, disposable, surgical instruments.
